Saskia Friedrich, Studio view, Saggaponack, NY, November, 2019

Halsey McKay is pleased to present Meteors in Metamorphosis, Saskia Friedrich’s first solo exhibit with the gallery. Friedrich’s work draws on multiple systems of thought and eclectic fields of interest: green architecture, sustainable cities, biostructures, Sufi mysticism, and the tradition of whirling. She continues to concern herself with art expressed as environment and its relationship to oneself and others. With a meditative approach, Friedrich views her role as both a translator and perceiver deeply informed by nature. The works on display appropriately feel both terrestrial, and cosmic.

Curved and organic in their asymmetry each work is composed of aluminum and cotton. The contrast of materials is felt upon viewing as each work gently absorbs and reflects light. This push/pull between the matte of the cotton and sheen of the aluminum plays with the relationship between the curved free flowing line of the circumference and the straight repetition of each work’s pattern. The patina in the texture of the work’s aluminum feels biomorphic and sedimentary, a grounding base to the bold, singular color of each pattern. Body-like in size, this series of works evolved to become a conduit for Friedrich’s longing to construct memorizers of love, vessels to store and commemorate what we emote and receive.
