TIMOTHY BERGSTROM – SETS THE DOGS TO HOWLING
On view by appointment January 19 – February 17, 2025
HMGP 60 Greenpoint Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
In the early 20th century, music and spirituality epitomized a new standard of what painting could become. I believe that reinvestigating this regressive idea can bring a fresh tension and new avenues to image making. Painting’s aspirations to music was really a lens to research a painting’s intrinsic properties of light, space and form, thereby shedding the skin of image making to create new language. But its essence is goop, a glue that binds pigment to its oozy essence. Its most true form is a reflection of humanity’s body and spirit, a Frankensteinian build of grotesque beauty, good and evil, trauma and transcendence. It should always reflect its maker, humanity’s contradiction of a fragile creature capable of scratching in the dirt and flying in the heavens.
