Halsey Mckay Gallery in collaboration with 1stdibs at The New York Design Center is pleased to present Odd Antique, an exhibition of new paintings by Brooklyn NY-based artist Joseph Hart. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 1st, from 6 to 8 pm.
For Odd Antique, Hart will present a suite of new paintings on paper, panel and canvas. Collectively, the body of work explores compositional hierarchies and incidental versus articulated mark making.
Utilizing acrylic paint, oil stick, enamel, cut paper-collage and graphite, Hart creates visual moments that are alternatively calm and chaotic, hard and soft, that push and pull and create other forms of tension that ultimately lead to awkward yet resolved configurations. Layering color and marks, folding, cutting, editing, destroying and building back up the image play essential roles in his studio practice. Hart’s approach is very controlled at times and loose during others, creating a diverse set of gestures that bring to mind the fragmented geometry of Kandinsky, the determined line of Basquiat and the immediacy of Twombly.
Born in New Hampshire, Joseph Hart lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. In 1999, he received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Hart’s paintings have been exhibited at Galerie Vidal Saint Phalle in Paris and Halsey Mckay Gallery in East Hampton, New York. Hart’s work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Alexander & Bonin, CRG Gallery and Klaus Von Nichtssangend Gallery in New York, among others.
